Making the Tough Call

Issue 1.16

Acts 15 gives us a brief glimpse into the leadership style of James, one of the key leaders of the first century Jerusalem church. Faced with an extremely "tough call," James proved himself to be a man worthy of emulation.

The issue: How much of the Jewish law did the Gentiles need to obey? Of course, the problem wasn't just in answering this question -- the problem was in the question itself. And, very possibly, James saved the Jerusalem church from a major split by his wise, considerate responses.

1. Before James faced the tough call, he had already gained credibility in the eyes of his collegues. Acts 15:22 explains that after James spoke up, the debate was over. He had "gravitas."

2. He had a plan of decisive action. James suggested a plan that, though not a compromise, was able to please the whole group (vs. 14-22).

3. He used Scripture to make his case (vs.15-17. 21). His appeal to the Old Testament showed those "traditionalists" that the plan of action was true to their custom and faith.

4. He had the right timing. We notice in the text that James was not the first to speak, but this gave him the ability to be the last! He waited until after the Spirit-filled Paul and Barnabas had shared their experiences, then revealed the plan.

Because of his wisdom, James avoided a disaster in the church -- one that would have caused irreparable damages and probably ruined the reputation of Christ across the empire.

Making It Personal:

When you are preparing to share a vision or make a "tough call," ask yourself:

1) Do I have sufficient crediblity ("change in the pocket") to speak to this issue?

2) Do I have a specific plan of action that addresses the concerns of all parties involved?

3) Do I have Scripture or Scriptural principles I can share as I present my case?

4) Is this the right time?
