| Beholding the Glory of Christ
Issue 1.8 Spiritual disciplines are structures we build into our lives to keep us beholding the glory of Christ. Rather than being ends in themselves, the disciplines (celebration, service, Bible study, silence, prayer, etc.) are actually pathways through which we can see Jesus. There are five guidelines that can help us grow to effectively use the disciplines: 1) Remember that the disciplines are more internal than external. Spirituality is not measured by check-boxes or lists of accomplishments, but by a renovated heart, and a renewed mind. 2) Both regular, small doses, and occasional, large doses are necessary. You might choose to have a daily time of prayer and meditation, and occasionally schedule a time for extended reflection and communion with God. There is the "daily bread" that helps us to behold Christ throughout our weekly schedule, and there are also the "feasts" where we bask in His presence. 3) Tailor the disciplines to your station and season in life. Rather than attempting to mimic the disciplines of others, develop your own strategy for experiencing Christ in your daily context. We shouldn't feel guilty if our prayer life or fasting isn't the same as some great leader of the past, but we should prayerfully "tailor" spiritual disciplines into our lives to make us more like Jesus. 4) They are more about receiving than achieving. You aren't punching some spiritual timecard to prove your worth to God, and, truth be told, the disciplines aren't even for God. They are for us! Ask God to develop patterns in your life that will help you love Him more and live like Jesus! 5) Spiritual disciplines should not turn us into monks, but missionaries! They may start in the closet, but they end in the street. As we behold the glory of Christ, through the patient use of meditation, prayer, humility, fasting, silence, confession, and even celebration, we are equipped and empowered to fulfill the mission to which He has called us!
